Scratching the Surface is a series of actions in which very fine grit sandpaper was used to lightly scratch the surfaces of locations in and around the Gyeonggi Creation Center art residency in Daebudo, the nearby city of Anson, Seoul, and even the Demilitarized Zone of South Korea. The impressions left on the sandpaper are as indelible as the memories of this journey, and the hope is that, like the faint imprint left behind by the action of the sanding, Richard Humann’s presence in Korea has left an impression on the places that he has visited during his long-term stay.
