Hard Return is a kinetic sculpture that traverses a 30-foot long distance of the gallery. A video projector is mounted to an automated device that propels it back and forth along a metal track, mimicking the return mechanism of an old-fashioned typewriter. The video that is projected shows a close-up of a typewriter striking words onto the gallery wall. The letters that are being typed are running in reverse, thus deleting the message of the work. The message is a self-affirmation and awareness written in poetic verse of the time restraints of life. The full message begins with “Twelve words, I am moving quickly towards the end of what is called me” and throughout the process of the kinetic movement and video projection it is reduced down to simply the words and proclamation “One word, I”.
