Richard Humann • The Tiger Horse installed over the DMZ between North and South Korea • 2018

The Tiger Horse is an augmented reality art installation that has been installed over the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea. It resides permanently in the village of Cheorwon, inside the Civilian Control Zone (CCZ).

The work represents both North and South Korea and how they—although separate countries—are bound together by language and culture, sharing both a long history as well as a common peninsula.

In the artwork, the tiger represents South Korea, and the winged white horse represents North Korea Their heads rest upon the bodies of magpies, which are prevalent to the region and freely fly between both countries. A rope binds the bodies of the magpies together, which represents both the DMZ and the powerful bind of both countries.

The Tiger Horse is a symbol of peace, a symbol of recognition—but above all, it is a symbol of unification.

  • The Tiger Horse is an addition to the ongoing Ascension augmented reality art installation series that premiered at the 2017 Venice Biennale.
